Lesson 6: Learning Chemistry

Chemistry is all that make us happen!

The goal of this class is for students to reach comprehension on the basic knowledge of Organic Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry.

In this lesson:

a) You will learn about the differences between organic and inorganic chemistry

b) You will use Edmodo's website to discuss how to solve different chemical equations with other users.

The main objectives are the following:

To identify organic chemistry as the branch of Chemistry studying the chemical compounds making life possible.

To comprehend the classification of organic compounds based on the functional groups.

To identify inorganic chemistry as the branch of Chemistry studying the chemical compounds and elements not part of organic chemistry.

To comprehend the mathematic expressions to symbolize a chemical equation.

To name a chemical compound using different naming systems

For students requiring a deeper knowledge of this topic, special classes can be offered.

In the upper links you will find several exercises to be covered during the class.

We adopt the US grading system which is the following

Letter grade   Percentage

A+                97–100%

A                  93–96%

A-                 90–92%

B+                87–89%

B                  83–86%

B-                 80–82%

C+                77–79%

C                  73–76%

C−                70–72%

D+                67–69%

D                  63–66%

D−               60–62%

F                  < 60%

The evaluation scores are explained with the rubric.

First, understanding concepts!

Let's start reading chapters 1, 2, 15, 22, and 24:

Chemistry: The Study of Change

Atoms, molecules and ions

Acids and Bases

Non-metalic elements and their compounds

Organic Chemistry

After reading through the chapters, watch the video on using Edmodo and then go to the link to participate in the class activity. Please respect the answers of other classmates.

Go to the Edmodo website to enter the discussion

Here some instructions to join the class on Edmodo:

1- Go to https://new.edmodo.com/home

2- Create your account.

3- Enter the class code (kz69f3).

4- Go to the discussion area to share your answers with the group

Activity

Elaborate a table with different organic compounds and their functional groups. Upload the table to the Edmodo class.

Name the compounds and take a screenshot of your results and email it to the teacher (jstumpfs@g.emporia.edu)

Write a summary on the process of writting and equalizing a chemical equation then email it to the instructor.

Summary

You learned chemistry compounds can be divided mainly in Inorganic and organic compounds.

You learned how to identify different organic compounds by their functional groups. For example, the aldehyde have -CHO as their functional group, the bond line means they are termincal carbons.

You identified Organic Chemistry as studying the life compounds.

You identified Inorganic chemistry as studying studies all non-organic compounds.

You learned how to symbolize a chemical reaction and elaborate a chemical equation.
